Because I am a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.), I often get asked questions about Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine (O.M.M.) also known as Osteopathic Manipulation or Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment (O.M.T.). As D.O’s, many of us practice Osteopathic Manipulation as an optional therapy for patients of ours who would like to try a non-pharmacologic therapeutic option.
Patients who are experiencing back pain, TMJ pain, side pain, an acute cold, or headaches are just a few of the types of patients who may experience benefits from Osteopathic Manipulation. By definition, Osteopathic Manipulation is done by a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine, like me or an M.D. who has done specific training in the techniques, like Dr. Turshen. Through an in-depth understanding of the intricate relationship between asymmetries and imbalances of the body’s musculoskeletal system and the function of the body, we can make small adjustments in the spine, ligaments or musculature to help patients feel some immediate improvements. Medications like Advil, Aleve and Motrin seem like they are safe since they are available over the counter and without a prescription. But when taken outside of the recommended doses or in combination with other medications, they can often cause side effects or other health problems. Dr. Hedde explains above.
To see how we practice primary care differently visit us at www.directdoctors.org Yes, definitely. We believe that good primary care, especially by a family medicine doctor, can take care of over 85% of the medical needs that may come up over a patient’s lifetime. However, that still leaves some medical needs that are not “covered” by your Direct Doctors membership (surgeries, hospitalizations, rare disease treatments, etc). Luckily, these are few and far between, and some people may go their whole lifetime without needing any! In fact, CDC data from 2014 shows that only 7.3% of Americans required a hospitalization during that year, and that number is somewhat skewed by the over 65 population which had twice the rates of any other age group. And frankly, many of the younger patients who did end up in the ER and hospitalized likely had poor access to good primary care services.
As the days become colder and the holidays approach it can become very easy to add a couple of extra pounds. But there might be an easy switch you can make to help prevent that. Dr. Turshen explains above.

To see how we practice primary care differently visit us at www.directdoctors.org Often patients who are considering a membership at a Direct Primary Care practice, (like here at Direct Doctors) assume that in order to benefit from the unlimited access and direct relationship with their physician, they must also fork out a lot more money. Fortunately, that is not true. Whereas, concierge practices charge higher fees and still bill copays and insurance, Direct Primary Care doctors do none of the above. In fact, a number of our patients save substantial amounts of money every year as Direct Doctors’ patients.
